What is your ‘why’?
I asked the question on facebook today, “What is your ‘why’, dig deep… Just saying your “why” is your kids isn’t deep enough.” It was clear by the messages I got, that they didn’t really understand what I was asking. Their answers were more about what makes them happy, but not what propels them forward in life and helps them to make the choices they do.
So then I decided to explain myself better and I said the following:
I think I need to explain what the “why” is a little more clearly. Your “why” is what makes you wake up in the morning and do what you do. What drives your forward? What gives you your energy so you don’t quit. What motivates you?
For example, when I was starting my mobile scrapbooking business years ago, a friend of mine said to me, “Kel you’re going to go bankrupt before you even start.” I was so mad at her comment that it made me work even harder to prove her wrong. That was my ‘why’ at the time. Every time I wanted to quit, I could hear her voice say those words to me and it propelled me to move forward and not quit.
Was it a good why? I don’t know, but at the time when I needed my motivation the most, it worked for me.
Will your “why” be the same forever? In my case, no, it has changed over time. It changed when my purpose and passion would change. At one time, my “why” was because I didn’t want to see any teenagers commit suicide. That was huge for me. If I didn’t want to get out of bed in the morning, all I had to do was think about “What if I could help one kid stay alive one more day?” I would jump out of bed and get right to work.
Why are we involved with the Day of Love? Because our “why” is that we want people to learn how to heal and restore themselves while connecting with God, themselves and others.
Ok, now what’s your “why?” What gives you your fuel to motivate you to jump out of bed and get cracking every morning?
