Relationships – What’s in it for me?
Have you ever asked yourself, “What’s in it for me?” when you have been in a relationship? Then count yourself among many who have done the same. Communication is one of the biggest things in a relationship too. Just as the image below shows people communicating, partners in a relationship should too.
Now the type of relationships I’m talking about are those that are beyond friendship and are moving into a dating relationship. Before really getting into a “dating” relationship, you should ask yourself the following questions:
- What do I bring to this relationship?
- What do I get out of this relationship?
- Does this relationship make me feel good about myself?
- Can I grow within this relationship?
- Can my potential partner grow within this relationship?
If you answered negatively to any of the above question then ask yourself why did you answer negatively and is it a deal breaker in continuing into the relationship. If you answered positively, then you just might be in a relationship that is a good fit for you.
I recently received some great advice from a good friend, Clarissa Silva. She said the following to me:
Make sure that you don’t “play at” a relationship if the other person is not ready or you are not ready for a relationship. “Light flirting” shouldn’t be part of a relationship that has nowhere to go. When looking at a potential relationship partner, make sure that they are emotionally ready to “be in” a relationship. If you are not ready and/or the other person is not ready, then you will create a codependent relationship which is not good.
According to Lorii Abela, These are good fundamentals.
Bottom line is still “what do you want?” Early on, it should be stated clearly. Moreover, say “no” to a someone who does not fit in “what do you want.” The One for you is also looking for you, why spend your time in “settling” with whomever is available.
With all of that said, I’m thankful that they gave me these wise kernels of advice.
P.S. If you haven’t been part of ‘The DOL View’, livestreams yet you may want to check out the show HERE. It’s free and you’ll be able to grab your own kernels of wisdom.
