How I Became A Thief At Barnes & Noble

Screen Shot 2013-12-20 at 10.30.06 PMI became a thief…that’s right. A thief!  I don’t know that anyone sets out to become a thief on purpose, I know I sure didn’t, but its what I was when I walked out of a store with a book under my arm that I didn’t pay for.

I was in Barnes and Noble one day doing some research on NDE’s (near death experiences).  I noticed Eben Alexander, MD‘s book, “Proof of Heaven” and began reading.  Dr. Alexander is the Neurosurgeon that did not believe in God, nor in his patient’s stories about their near death experiences until he had his own experience. His face was then everywhere; Oprah, Good Morning America, all kinds of television, radio and magazines.  I too had experiences during my brain injury so Eban’s book was of great interest to me.

While in Barnes and Noble that day I was also waiting to meet with my volunteer director (I volunteer for HOSPICE and sit with patients that are dying, which is another reason I wanted to research NDE’s), so when she came in we sat down to eat lunch.

She tells me she bought a car a few weeks ago even though she wasn’t planning to. “Me too!” I said with a chuckle, thinking no one else would ever do what we did; wake up one morning and say, “Lets buy a car today!”

She said she had to bring the car back on Thursday because the dealership didn’t have a chance to get it detailed or checked over.  Huh….that’s interesting…”Me too!” I said, wondering if it was the same car company.

She said she bought the car at Exclusive Motorcars (out of the dozen’s of dealerships in this area), and again, my response was, “Me too!!”

Have you ever had this kind of experience where you have no idea why things would happen this way but they do?  I just knew we must have had the same experiences on the same weekend for a reason neither of us were aware of.

We changed the subject after a while and began to discuss my next patient assignment. She looked down and noticed the book I was reading and inquired if it was good.  I shared a little about Alexander’s experience and then my own with an experience I had after my brain injury. A healing, white light, love filling the room, visions of my being an author, speaker, talking to people from all over the world.  She was intrigued and we stretched a 30 minute meeting into an hour.

She opened her heart up about her life and the miracles she experienced. It was only natural that I asked her to be part of my latest book, “God’s Miracles” which she gladly agreed to.

We said our goodbye’s and I headed toward the parking lot to get in my car. You’ll never guess who’s car was parked near mine. No kidding!  We’ve become very dear friends since that day, but what does this have to do with my becoming a thief you might be asking?

Shortly after leaving the store, I got home, pulled into the driveway and stopped the car. I reached for my purse in the passenger’s seat, and what do I see when I look down? The non-purchased book, “Proof of Heaven”!

“Oh noooooo” I said out loud, “I stole Eben’s book!!”

I picked up my cell phone immediately, google’d Barnes & Noble and called immediately. I explained the situation and offered to pay for the book right over the phone.

When I reached someone here is what the woman onScreen Shot 2013-12-20 at 10.31.31 PM the other end of the line said. “M’am, you have literally restored my faith in humanity. I’m in shock that you actually called in to pay for it.”

How sad, I thought, that her faith in humanity is so low that she would be shocked.

“What book was it?” the B&N lady asked.

“Proof of Heaven” I said.

She replied, “Really…(long pause)…well maybe its something I ought to read.”

I was so grateful for being a thief right at that moment. It opened a door for her to realize that there still are honest people in the world and to talk about something she might not have ever discussed with anyone, her disappointment in humanity.

I knew there was a reason I was there that day, and I’ve have been deeply grateful for both of my personal values; to live as a person of integrity, and to be a good listener.  You never know what can happen when you stay true to who you are.

Eben’s book is really intriguing by the way … you can find it on Amazon and while you’re there, pick up a copy of my own best selling book, God’s Miracles: True Stories of Healing & Restoration. These stories will amaze you and help you believe, there really IS more to this life than what you or I ever could have imagined.
